Introducing: Clapham Common

CC Southside

Clapham is and has for some time been one of London’s most sought after places to live. A bustling high street lined with thriving local businesses, plenty of green space and a charming array of period and modern property styles have led the area to sustain both a young and vibrant dynamic and a safe, family friendly feel with excellent schooling options.

The areas toward Clapham North and Brixton are particularly popular with young professionals and first time buyers looking for character and easy access from Central London. Both Clapham Common and Brixton are home to a vibrant night life and many excellent restaurants.

For families and those seeking residential greenery there is plenty of property on offer. Clapham Old Town and the streets surrounding Abbeville Road both have a distinct ‘village’ feel – these are the places to live if being within walking distance of your local patisserie takes your fancy. Families in the Clapham Common area are spoilt for choice when it comes to schooling options and the green open space of the Common is ever popular with all.

Ancient Roots: acupuncture in South West London

Ancient RootsFor our Best Local Businesses series we find and report on great local enterprises many of which are recommended by the team at James Pendleton Estate Agents in Balham. This week’s blog focuses on Ancient Roots, an acupuncturist and healer based in Balham and with ties to Central London.

Melanie Hackwell started Ancient Roots after years of training in Chinese Medicine taught her the value of this ancient practice in a society which values chemical remedies above their herbal counterparts. “Acupuncture has been practiced in China for over 2000 years and comes from a time when people understood the world through interpreting nature; when someone was sick it was understood to be caused by one of the elements, often wind which was associated with cold.”

In modern China, Melanie says, the medical profession still has tremendous respect for the lessons learned by their ancestors and you have to be a trained doctor to administer acupuncture and related therapies. As Melanie explains “the skill lies in reading the body as a network of energy channels, identifying where energy is blocked or lacking and applying thousands of years of skill and observation to identify a solution. Chinese medicine very successfully combines analysis with intuition, something which Western medicine often fails to do.”

So where does the name Ancient Roots come from? Melanie’s studies taught her the disciplines of acupuncture and Tui Na massage, which along with knowledge of herbal remedies make up the three roots of Chinese medicine. She has built up impressive experience of two of the three roots during four years of study and over 18 months of practice.

Melanie Hackwell

Melanie Hackwell

A member of the British Acupuncture Council, Melanie is an assured, qualified and fully certified practitioner and recommends that those who are considering or curious about acupuncture or Tui Na find a practitioner with the right level of training. “There is a lot of scepticism surrounding acupuncture in particular in the UK which is mainly due to improper training; one year of study isn’t enough. A good practitioner has learnt not only to apply the techniques correctly to the right part of the body, but also to look at the body as a whole and in doing so to identify imbalances.”

Melanie’s own interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine stems from a lifelong interest in alternative therapies and a pivotal moment in her personal life. “My dissertation was on the success of acupuncture as an IVF treatment; I studied this area because my own treatment was instrumental to the success of my own IVF course.” Melanie was advised to undergo acupuncture while undergoing IVF and found the approach both relaxing and invigorating. “The practitioner was committed not just to resolving my problem but to treating me as a person, which led to an improvement in my overall health as well as the quality of my eggs and ultimately to conception”.

The key, Melanie says, is to give acupuncture or Tui Na a try; to hold back on misconceptions until you’ve seen a well-qualified acupuncturist. Medicine doesn’t have to revolve around chemistry and appointments; with practices such as Melanie’s it can revolve around your life.

Our Social Media & Marketing Manager, another Melanie, who is working from our Balham office has met her and tried Melanie’s treatment so watch this space to find out more about her great experience!

Melanie now collaborates with her fertility doctor who is the Medical Director of Concept Fertility in Putney. You can visit her website at www.ancient roots.co.uk or email her at melhackwell@ancientroots.co.uk

Best Local Businesses: Tendental, dentists in Clapham

The Tendental team

The Tendental team

When you think of a typical high street business a dental clinic is unlikely to spring to mind.  Nor is a trip to the dentist typically seen as a pleasant sensory experience (if anything, the opposite applies).  Tendental’s two branches in Clapham and Balham go a long way to overturning both assumptions; these thoroughly thought out, attractive clinics bring professionalism, modernity and a touch of class to high street dentistry. James Pendleton Estate Agents’ Clapham South and Balham office on Balham Hill highly recommend this extremely well thought out local business.

The clinics are run by business partners and firmly established dental practitioners Dr Martin Wanendeya and Dr Nikhil Sisodia, both of whom have a string of impressive professional qualifications following their names.  We met Nik at the Balham practice, just down the road from our Estate Agents’ Clapham South and Balham office on a slightly stormy Tuesday for an introduction to the clinic and its staff, and were pleasantly surprised at the advances Martin and Nik are making in reshaping dentistry as we know it.

Tendental’s most radical departure from the gloomy norm relates to the senses.  This practice has created olfactory, auditory, tactile and visual environments designed to ease the nerves and relax the mind.  Our team were particularly taken by the TV screens wired to the ceiling above each dentist’s chair; if they wish to, each patient can choose what television programme to watch (and listen to via wireless headphones) as they recline.  The clinic is also scented at all times with fragrances chosen to soothe and relax – the infamous ‘dentist smell’ may be a thing of the past!  In another clever touch, the trays of sharp instruments which give some patients the shivers have been concealed out of view of the dentist’s chair.

As is clear the emphasis at Tendental is on the patient experience and in the second instalment of our blog on this local practice we’ll be describing in detail one of the free advice sessions the team offers.  As a result of this first meeting the patient is able to make informed decisions about which procedures will be most beneficial without feeling pressured.  As with the treatment room itself, the consultation experience has undergone a wholly positive transformation.

Tendental’s ground-breaking approach to dental care is in part down to its being an independent clinic.  Nik and Martin had the privilege of being able to develop their vision of a dental practice, and judging by their success so far their combination of experience and client focus has certainly paid off.  The clinic has built up an excellent local reputation and is now the largest referral practice in South London; an accomplished team with a variety of specialisms makes for a handy point of contact when another surgery’s waiting list exceeds availability.  Several members of James Pendleton Estate Agents’ Clapham South and Balham team have had positive experiences at the clinic and we’ll be explaining why in our upcoming post.

Tendental have taken their clients’ busy lives into account too.   As Estate Agents in South West London we’re well aware of the area’s family friendly reputation and Tendental have taken this into account, taking on a nationally acclaimed children’s dental specialist and opening at family friendly hours (they’re thinking of extending opening hours at weekends.  There are also plans to extend the business as a whole due to its growing popularity; so you may soon find a Tendental near you wherever you are.

Best Local Businesses in Battersea: V Clarke Makeup Artistry

V Clarke Makeup Artistry

V Clarke Makeup Artistry

We are always on the lookout for exciting new local businesses and James Pendleton  Estate Agents’ Battersea team have heartily recommended V Clarke Makeup Artistry. Providing skilled makeovers and friendly informed advice in a fully mobile service, Clarke’s 17 years’ experience with make-up has given her real expertise, which is backed up by an engaging, helpful and enthusiastic approach and a genuine desire to build a business which fits around her clients’ lives.

Vanessa has lived in and loved the Northcote Road area for over ten years and has worked with make-up since the age of 16.  While working full time as a teacher she often spent evenings and weekends helping friends, family and an increasing network of contacts to prepare for special occasions, and her eagerness to meet and help people has stood her in good stead in establishing her business.

“I launched V Clarke Makeup Artistry three months ago and while I have a huge amount of makeup experience I have found the administrative side of setting up a business a real learning curve” says Vanessa of her experiences so far.  “I knew I had to hit the ground running so I researched extensively before the launch but nothing can prepare you for the adrenaline and pace of the work itself.  While setting up the company has been a challenging experience it has also been immensely rewarding: I’ve met so many people who’ve shown real support and have found that if you work hard and with a positive attitude others will react in kind ”

Vanessa’s focus is on the needs and wishes of her clients and V Clarke Makeup Artistry is most definitely designed to fit around a lifestyle.  While visiting a salon is undoubtedly pleasant, a mobile therapist provides an added level of convenience and intimacy.  Having worked extensively with a wide range of products and brands, Vanessa is perfectly placed to make a recommendation and a convivial, relaxed setting means freedom from some of the pressures of salon life: you can relax, chat and test different products in the knowledge that the next client isn’t waiting in the foyer.

Having worked with wedding parties for years Vanessa is adept at handling the many small crises that can affect a bride’s big day.  Delayed deliveries, late arrivals and high expectations can make a wedding morning as tense as it is exciting and having a dedicated, experienced beautician on hand can make all the difference. That said, V Clarke Makeup Artistry is not solely tailored to wedding parties; working collaboratively with a freelance photographer as well as with numerous other independent local businesses, Vanessa’s network of contacts and eagerness to learn means she is uniquely placed to handle projects large and small.  Whatever your makeup needs you will surely benefit from a conversation with this thorough, experienced and thoughtful new business.

Parents in particular find V Clarke Makeup Artistry a breath of fresh air; with two small children herself, Vanessa appreciates the importance of time out, pampering and conversation, and as a mother and former teacher has a healthy respect for learning, teaching and the holistic approach to make up. “When people aren’t comfortable with the make-up they’re using they can feel both uncomfortable and overwhelmed.  It’s my job to remove doubts or worries and to use each client’s style and personality to inform their make-up choices.”

The female contingent at James Pendleton Estate Agents in Battersea branch have worked with Vanessa and don’t hesitate to recommend V Clarke Makeup Artistry.   The future most certainly holds exciting things for this energized, enthusiastic and ambitious new business.  If you would like to find out more about this beauty therapist in Battersea take a look at her Facebook page or contact her on 07834 835 462.

A successful cycle ride for the LivetoGive team

IMG_2246

As fundraising teams go, James Pendleton Estate Agents’ South West London charity organisation LivetoGive is certainly active.  Since winning Trinity Hospice’s Best Charity Partnership with a Local Business award in December the team has plans aplenty in the pipeline and has organised a number of exciting events and initiatives in 2013 that you can discover here.

The latest of these was the long anticipated London to Brighton cycle ride, which saw ten representatives take to the streets on two wheels in the name of charity and raised a phenomenal £1657!  As ever, the team was fundraising for three causes with very strong local and company bonds: Action for Children, Trinity Hospice and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.  These three charities hold very great importance for this Estate Agents’ South West London team and LivetoGive has proactive links with all three: the charity organisation holds regular meetings with all three with fundraising innovation in mind.

Sunday’s 54 mile journey passed through James Pendleton Estate Agent’s South West London base, leading through Clapham, Tooting and Wandsworth on its way to the M25 before breaking out into open countryside on the way to East Sussex’s most famous destination, sometimes known as ‘London-By-The-Sea’.  The route includes some formidable hill climbs as well as many spectacular views and in LivetoGive’s prior experience of the ride there is no greater feeling than catching a first glimpse of the sea at the end of a day’s cycling!

The team are glad to report no injuries and a relatively incident free cycle.  Differing levels of training and ability meant a staggered finish for the ten but all were delighted to spot heart shaped James Pendleton balloons scattered through the crowd, one of which made it to the finish line on the back of a tandem ridden by two Blues Brothers!  As the photos show the team had a fantastic time and as the fundraising totals show they were amply supported by friends, family and well-wishers!  The team send their thanks to all who donated; if you’d like to contribute just pay a visit to LivetoGive’s JustGiving page.

To find out more about the latest and upcoming LivetoGive initiatives keep checking James Pendleton’s homepage: this Estate Agents in South West London posts regular news and updates on their charity organisation’s activities.  Alternatively visit the LivetoGive website.

Best local businesses: Cheekaboo Baby Massage and Beautiful Butterfly

Massage and Baby Massge in South West London

Set up by Sophia Jarrett and her cousin Michelle Maliki, Beautiful Butterfly provides a range of therapies and treatments from their base in Balham’s Movers and Shapers gym.  Sophia and Michelle’s combined background marries the scientific with the holistic and Beautiful Butterfly is fast establishing a great reputation throughout South West London, as is sister company Cheekaboo Baby Massage (International Association of Infant Massage certified) which teaches parents how to bond, understand and communicate with their babies though the art of massage.

I met Sophia on a sunny Friday in the delightful setting that is Trinity Stores café and spoke to her about the ambitions driving both companies and the response of local residents to the innovative services they offer.

Cheekaboo Baby Massage

On meeting Sophia I was especially interested in learning about Cheekaboo Baby Massage, the idea of which seemed both fascinating and a little confusing.  Having been assured that the practice does not involve Sophia massaging babies but instead guiding parents in how to do so, I began to learn about the benefits of her 5 week courses.

Baby massage, Sophia explained, has a number of positive physiological effects for babies.  Baby Massage can help with the development of babies nervous system, which is particularly beneficial to babies whose nervous systems are newly developed and sometimes underdeveloped.  What’s more, massage can help to relieve colic and other troublesome digestive problems such as constipation and gas, and encourage a deeper sleep for babies.  Sophia has found since starting Cheekaboo that parents reported that the classes have enhanced the bond between them and their baby and that the classes had boosted their confidence in understanding their baby’s needs.

What makes Cheekaboo unique among parent-baby groups and classes (and there are a number of these) is that Sophia goes out of her way to involve and support parents of premature baby and those who have spend time in NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit).  This is partly due to her own parenting experiences as she too was separated from her child at birth who spent time in a NICU.

Indeed, Sophia says, parents of both genders find the classes both relaxing and informative; fathers are given a chance to have more of an input into baby’s wellbeing (Sophia is thinking of setting up classes specifically for fathers) and the community that Cheekaboo provides offers both parents, and even older siblings, an opportunity to share and explain their concerns.

Having a newborn can sometimes be overwhelming and for some parents can be an isolating experience; the message Sophia and Cheekaboo , convey to parents. ‘Imagine the warm, safe space of the womb; in class we recreate a cocoon of quietness and calm. We are accepting of our babies as they are, whether soundly asleep or expressing their needs through crying or alert and ready – all expressions of life are welcomed in class. It is a time for you to relax and be in a present state acknowledging what is happening between you and your baby’.

Baby Massage Classes run every 5 weeks at Movers and Shapers, Balham.  The next course starts 28th June from 12.30-2pm.  All babies from newborn up to 12 months are welcome.

Beautiful Butterfly

The inspiration for Beautiful Butterfly came about while Michelle and Sophia were exploring how their creative ideas and skills could collaborate to enhance the life style and well being of themselves and others.

The emphasis is not simply on providing treatments but on identifying clients’ well being needs and lifestyle goals, thus enabling them to take better care of themselves in the long term.  Beautiful Butterfly is aimed at adults of all ages and genders and treatments are priced according to how long they last; packages of 3, 6, 8 and 12 hours are available and how they’re used is discussed during the initial detailed consultation.

As Sophia explains, the more aware a person is of where their body is currently at and what their body needs, the easier it is for them to understand which treatment suits them best.  “When we first meet our clients at consultation we talk with them at length about a number of factors:  lifestyle, health choices and stress levels, all have different impacts on our bodies and we need to take this into account when deciding which therapies will help the most”

Beautiful Butterfly’s slogan is ‘You are Beautiful, Now Pass it On’ and the impression the team gives off is a friendly, informative and nurturing one.  That said, there’s a formidable skill set behind the friendliness, and this wealth of knowledge informs every decision and consultation.  Michelle has an established background in complementary and holistic therapy while Sophia’s degree in neuro-muscular therapy has given her real insight into the relationship between the muscular and nervous systems.  The two areas of expertise combined can uncover, untangle and treat a vast array of stress related issues.

Both Beautiful Butterfly and Cheekaboo focus on teaching clients how to take better care of themselves and their families.  Sophia and Michelle have a refreshingly honest drive to provide the best service and resources possible; they have not forgotten the importance of self-sufficiency and integrity to well-being. Both ventures are places to check in, take stock and learn gradually how to make relaxation an integral part of life rather than a rigidly scheduled appointment.

Beautiful Butterfly is open Wednesdays – Saturdays at Movers and Shapers Balham. Contact Michelle on 07951 686866 or Sophia on 07939 087698. ubeautifulbutterfly@gmail.com
